We don’t like finding ourselves in the wrong group, the wrong classroom at school, the wrong line at a store or the wrong lane of traffic in a busy city. We may find we need to cross over from the wrong crowd to the right crowd. There is one group you don’t want to find yourself in… …that is the line of most people on the day of judgment…the mass of people who are going to be judged…who are going to hell. That is why… Jesus says: Amen, Amen, I tell you: Anyone who hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He is not going to come into judgment but has crossed over from death to life.

In John Chapter 5 the hostile Jews have pure hatred for Jesus for healing a man. Why? Because this proves that Jesus is the Son of God and thus the true God is the Holy Trinity and that Jesus heals on the Sabbath Day.  The Trinity is the one true God of grace of the Father who sends the Son to save and that Jesus heals on the Sabbath Day is an attack on the pharisees man made rules of self righteousness…which is the opposite of being saved by grace alone.  By denying the Trinity and thus salvation by grace leaves the unbelieving Jews in the group left in sin and guilt and death on the day of judgment.

Are we on the path of sin and death?  We do have sin!  Just examine your own heart.  Are we not also evil, have evil thoughts, words and deeds?  Our OT prophet says: Look! The day is coming, burning like a blast furnace. All the arrogant and every evildoer will be stubble. The day that is coming will set them on fire, says the Lord of Armies, a day that will not leave behind a root or branch for them. How can we escape the group that will face God’s judgment of wrath? Whenever God has warned of judgment, it came! Think of the fall into sin by Adam and Eve…death came to all. Think of the Flood in Noah’s say, all but a few were drowned, the destruction of Sodom and Gomorra had all but Lot’s family burned by fire and brimstone and the destruction of Jerusalem in the OT and as Jesus warned in 70 AD the larger group was slain. So the day is coming for the destruction of this world on the day of Judgment!  What crowd will we be in on that day? It is coming!

But we may enjoy the group that does not think of the last day but lives for the now.  What good will it do if we gain the whole world, but lose our soul in the fires of hell? The day of judgment will come suddenly.  People will be going about their lives.  And Christ will come and the sheep and the goats, damned and saved will be instantly divided into two groups.

Jesus has come to have you cross over from death to life. Jesus teaches you the wonderful doctrine of God—the Holy Trinity and that God saves the world by grace. First, see the unity of the Godhead, of the Trinity: Indeed, the Son does exactly what the Father does. 20For the Father loves the Son and shows him everything he is doing. Second, see that you are saved by grace! 1For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to those he wishes.  Jesus is whom the Father has sent for you. Jesus has earned for you a perfect life so that his holy life is now yours. Jesus also atoned for all your sins by his suffering, his bleeding, his dying and burial. Jesus took what blocked the path, the line to heaven and took it away. You have crossed over from death to life!

Judgement day is coming—but rejoice!  Be amazed at Easter. He rose. Celebrate Christ’s ascension. Jesus lives and he comes again to judge the world! And he will show him even greater works than these so that you will be amazed. You are now in the group who do not wait in line for judgment but you are in the group who are his own dear family, his church, the righteous.  You will be separated on that day and on his right side with all whom the Holy Spirit has given saving faith in the Trinity who redeemed us by pure grace through the Son.

In the middle of the two groups on that last day is he who will be the judge: Christ the King! The judge is Jesus! The judge is he who died for you, rose for you, washed you clean, made you his by baptism, gave you the Holy Spirit to have faith, and to kept you in the faith…on the path of life until that great and joyous day!  “In fact, the Father judges no one, but has entrusted all judgment to the Son, 23so that all should honor the Son just as they honor the Father. We are have crossed over from death to the path of life in Jesus.  24Amen, Amen, I tell you: Anyone who hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He is not going to come into judgment but has crossed over from death to life.

Sometimes we find a great line and see someone we know and welcome them to join us. As you have crossed from death to life, you want others to join you in the life of Christ. That is why we are here on earth still, why the day of the Lord is taking time, so that others will join us by crossing over from death to life. That is why we have preaching, mission work, Christian Eduction, evangelism… to proclaim Christ who brings us from death to life. So many must realize they are in the the wrong group and they will come to hear of the Trinity, the Father who so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son so that we may not parish but have everlasting life.

Life can be a frantic jockeying for position in lines and getting in and out of groups. As long as you have crossed over from death to life you can live with peace and contentment as you know the day of the Lord is coming but you are in the life of Jesus. 21For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to those he wishes. It is great to have confidence you are on the right path, the way of life, a way that God has made very familiar to you as you abide in Jesus. It is great to know even if you lose all things here you have everything in Christ…life now and when the comes on the last day!   You know and believe the one true God: the Holy Trinity and you know and believe you are saved by Grace!  You have crossed over from death to life!  Amen.
